Mobile Driver's Licenses for Secure Digital Verification

Venable's Jeremy Grant on How Mobile Driver's Licenses Can Help Fight Cybercrime
Jeremy Grant, managing director, Venable

The United States has no national ID - but mobile driver's licenses could offer a secure, user-centric and privacy-enhancing alternative for online identity verification and help organizations overcome deficiencies in digital identity infrastructure, said Jeremy Grant, managing director at Venable.

The challenge lies in moving authoritative credentials from paper documents and plastic cards to the digital space, Grant said.

"Because there is not a reliable way to easily enable Americans to prove who they are online, we are seeing cybercriminals and hostile nation-states sweep in to steal billions of dollars from Americans, exploiting deficiencies in digital identity infrastructure."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Grant discussed:

  • The historical reluctance about mobile driver's licenses and mindset shift required to embrace them;
  • The challenges of implementing mobile driver's licenses for remote ID proofing;
  • Risk mitigation methods for securing user data.

Grant, an ISMG contributor who leads technology business strategy at Venable, was the founding leader of the National Program Office for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace and senior executive adviser for identity management at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He led the White House's initiative to catalyze a marketplace of secure, easy-to-use, privacy-enhancing identity solutions for online services through government and private sector partnerships.
